Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a white, powdery, stable, and non-toxic water-soluble polymer made from vinyl acetate through alcoholysis and polymerization. It can quickly dissolve in room temperature water to form a stable colloid, and water is a good solvent for polyvinyl alcohol. Polyvinyl alcohol has excellent film-forming properties, resulting in excellent adhesion, solvent resistance, friction resistance, tensile strength, and oxygen barrier properties. Polyvinyl alcohol has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional groups, making it a substance with interfacial activity. Therefore, polyvinyl alcohol can be used as a protective colloid for polymer emulsification and suspension polymerization reactions.
